DOI recovery
How to Find a Missing DOI from an Academic Citation
Learn how to recover a missing DOI from title, author, journal, year, volume, issue, and page signals without treating a search result as proof.
A missing DOI is not automatically an error
Older articles, books, theses, local journals, and some conference records may not have a DOI. The right first step is to determine whether an identifier should exist for the work, not to force one into every reference.
When a DOI is likely, use the citation as a set of search signals. A partial title alone can produce convincing but incorrect matches, especially for common phrases or translated titles.
Use the strongest available signals
Search in stages. Start with an exact DOI if one is present but malformed. Otherwise, combine a normalized title with the first author and year, then use journal, volume, issue, and page information to separate close candidates.
Provider results are evidence, not an automatic correction. Compare the candidate metadata against the complete citation and look for contradictions.
- Normalize punctuation and whitespace without changing the original citation.
- Prefer an exact identifier match when it resolves to the expected work.
- Use page ranges and journal information to distinguish similarly titled papers.
- Compare records across relevant scholarly providers.
- Return no DOI when the evidence does not support one.
How to assess a recovered DOI
A recovered DOI is useful when the candidate identity is supported by multiple independent fields and the provider record is coherent. Check the DOI resolver, title, author list, venue, publication year, and pages before updating a bibliography.
If providers disagree, keep the ambiguity visible. A blank DOI is safer than attaching the identifier of a different work.
A practical output
The best recovery workflow returns the proposed DOI, the matched work, the supporting sources, the fields that agree, and any unresolved conflict. That gives a researcher enough context to make a decision without repeating the entire search manually.
