DOI RECOVERY

Recover a missing DOI from an academic reference.

Paste an incomplete citation and CiteWise searches bounded scholarly sources for the underlying work. Review the candidate evidence before adding an identifier to a manuscript or reference list.

Evidence stays attached to the record.

The original input is preserved while provider matches, field evidence, and unresolved conflicts remain visible for review.

How this workflow works

  1. 01

    Paste the citation

Keep the original reference exactly as it appears, even when the DOI, pages, or journal name is missing.

  2. 02

    Compare candidates

CiteWise uses bibliographic agreement and provider coverage to rank possible works and expose near-ties.

  3. 03

    Review the DOI

Inspect the source URL, field evidence, confidence, and contradictions before accepting a correction.

What CiteWise checks

  • Exact DOI agreement when an identifier is present
  • Title, author, venue, year, volume, issue, and page agreement
  • Provider provenance from Crossref, OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, PubMed, or arXiv
  • A visible distinction between a recovered identifier and an unresolved suggestion

Important limitations

  • A work may not have a DOI or may be absent from the configured scholarly providers.
  • Older, local, book, thesis, and non-journal records often have less complete metadata.
  • A recovered DOI should still be checked against the publisher landing page before publication.

Can CiteWise find a DOI when the citation does not include one?

Often, yes. CiteWise extracts the strongest available signals such as title, authors, year, journal, volume, issue, and pages, then compares candidate works across relevant scholarly providers. A DOI is only proposed when the candidate identity and provider evidence support it; a model suggestion alone is never treated as proof.
