CiteWise

RIS FILE VALIDATOR

Validate RIS references before they enter your workflow.

Upload a .ris file to preview record counts, warnings, and normalized metadata. CiteWise keeps RIS tags such as TY, TI, AU, PY, DO, and ER within their records, so multi-line files are not treated as one-reference-per-line text.

Evidence stays attached to the record.

The original input is preserved while provider matches, field evidence, and unresolved conflicts remain visible for review.

How this workflow works

  1. 01

    Upload the file

Drop a .ris file into the import panel. The browser sends it for an in-memory preview with size and record limits.

  2. 02

    Inspect the preview

Review detected records, titles, authors, years, DOIs, and warnings before reserving verification quota.

  3. 03

    Start verification

Submit the confirmed records as a durable batch job and follow item-level progress and failures.

What CiteWise checks

  • RIS record boundaries using TY and ER tags
  • Repeated authors, keywords, abstracts, pages, volume, issue, and publication year
  • DOI and URL normalization without losing the source value
  • Warnings for missing titles, unsupported tags, malformed records, and invalid dates

Important limitations

  • The current import limit is 10 MB and 1,000 records per file.
  • RIS extensions produced by a particular reference manager may contain vendor-specific tags that need review.
  • Preview does not consume quota; verification reserves quota when the job starts.

What does CiteWise do with a RIS file?

The file is parsed as structured tagged text rather than split on newline characters. Each record is converted into common citation metadata, then can be sent through the same evidence-backed verification workflow used for pasted references. The original file is processed for the job and is not required to remain stored as a user-facing document.
